Reason of Fuel Hiking

JUST THINK OVER
  • What is the environment? Why is the global environment so important?
  • Can you name 10 different ways we use fuel or electricity every day?
  • What are ways that we could save fuel or electricity?
  • What does it mean to say that the U.S. is currently dependent on other nations for our petroleum?
  • How has transportation changed over the centuries?
  • What kind of fuel do most cars use today?
  • Are there different ways to power cars? Can you name any alternative sources of fuel?
  • Why don't more cars run on alternative fuel sources?
  • What do you think would be the best way to power a car?
  • How would the engine work?
  • Do you think cars will be the same when you're old enough to drive? How will they be different?

Earth Day Discussion

  • Can one person make a difference when it comes to helping the environment?
  • Can you name any well-known heroes who work to make a difference? (Answers might include Rachel Carson, Mardy Murie, or Gaylord Nelson.)
  • Can you name environmental heroes you know personally?
  • What is Earth Day? Is it something that is celebrated only in the United States?
  • What do people do on this day?
  • What can you do to make a difference? How about your school? Your family?
  • How can every day be like Earth Day?
  • Is there a way you can help spread the message about helping the environment?
  • What is an alternative fuel source? Can you name three?
  • Why are many alternative fuel sources better options for the planet?

Write important numbers on the blackboard to provide students with this background information:

  • According to a study at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, there are about 3 to 4.5 million traffic signals operating in the United States. Each one uses around 990 kilowatt-hours of electricity a year. Together, they consume almost 3 billion kilowatt-hours.
  • About 1.4 million tons of coal is needed to generate that much electricity.
  • A 100-watt light bulb uses 0.1 kilowatt-hours an hour.

Ask:

  • How many days could you light a 100-watt bulb using the same amount of energy a traffic signal uses in a year?
  • How long could you light the same bulb with the amount of energy used by all the traffic lights?
  • If your math book weighs a pound, how many math books would it take to equal the same weight as 1.4 million tons of coal?
  • Do you think we need traffic signals? Is there a different way of controlling traffic?
  • Can you think of an alternative source of energy for the traffic signals?
  • How can you let your community leaders know about your ideas?

Wrap up:

  • Explain that some communities have switched from using incandescent traffic lights to LEDs (light-emitting diodes). LEDs can cut energy consumption by up to 90 percent.

Extension:

  • Sacramento County in California has a plan to replace lights at more than 100 intersections with LEDs. This could save the county $67,000 in just one year.
  • Ask students to research traffic lights in their communities. Do the signals use incandescent lights or LEDs?

Burma's Non-Political Flood

The present world is currently evolving around only politics and natural disasters, there is no other meaning of life, no emotions, no relations, only suffering, pain, pain and more pain. My uncle from Burma, Myo Win, shared this poem with me to express the silent plight the innocent people of Burma are going through.

Burma's Non-Political Flood

Water, water, all around me
But I am so..so… thirsty.
Here, there, human bodies' everywhere
But none alive accompany me and share.
And I look at myself
Broken hopes and empty handed.
And I look further around
Just like a post heavy-battled ground.
Wild cyclone has wiped all things down.

Where are those kids from innocent playground?
Where are students in the green and white uniform?
Where is my town always singing along country rock songs?
Where are my mates who search for freedom and independent?
Where are those local chicks with new-leaf-color lips?
Where are those parents with a too busy habit?
All my questions disappear,
All my answers whisper…and whisperer.
Collaborated disaster of the nature and the dictator!

And I constantly hear voices from my empty stomach
Asking me food, forcing me speak out and stand up.
I silently speak with my loudest, to the entire world
Then mankind's sympathies come and knock my door.

Let me now open my door
'Cause those sympathies will help to fix my wounded floor.
Let me invite them with an open heart
'Cause those sympathies will help my life reconstruct.

Hello Mr. militarists,
Your guns are currently useless,
My demands are urgently needed,
Here, I'm alive, not a corpse yet,

Neither much time left.
Together, let's work out as a nice diplomat!

(Dedicated To My Mother And People Of Burma Who Lost Lives And
Who Are Hardly Survived Under Both Natural And Political Weathers!)

Ondu glass tampada majige kodi…

Summer can turn into a huge dilemma when the heat turns unbearable, warming you till the bones.

Forget the thermometer. Hot is hot in Mysore in the summer. Whether the weather is dry and parched or humid and damp, one needs to battle the heat and stay cool, calm and collected during summer.

The secret to this is eating healthy and keeping the body cool, but there is always a chaos when thinking what the right food is to eat in the summer’s heat and not upsetting your digestive system. And yet wouldn’t want to miss on the ‘khara’ and spicy taste makers.

A simple tang to quench the thirst while adhering to your taste-buds would be a huge glass filled with chilled and frothy ‘majige’ can do wonders.

Mysore gets really famous with majige stalls during summer season to grab a glass, or one can try a simple recipe at home.

You need:

1 cup Fat-free plain yogurt, 1 cup water, 2 tbsp minced onion, 1 small peeled minced garlic, a small slice of ginger and salt.

Heat 1tsp oil, add 1/4 tsp mustard, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, 2 curry leaves, few cilantro leaves,1/4 tsp pepper power. Stir until reddish and take it off the heat.

Add yogurt and the other ingredients in the first list and seasoning with 3-4 cubes of ice to a blender and blend well until frothy. Strain in to a tall glass, discard the solids and serve.

Bet this summer the refreshing majige would not only quench your thirst but keep you cool and healthy. Don’t you think?
